Last updated: · By MDH Holidays student consultancy team

Quick answer: study abroad news for Bangladeshi students

Student visas are getting harder to win in the UK, Australia and Canada, so a strong, genuine application matters more than ever for 2027 intakes. China remains the most generous scholarship destination, and Japan is building new study-and-work routes. Apply early, choose universities carefully, and make sure every document is authentic.

  • UK: 23.5% of Bangladeshi study visa applications were withdrawn in the first half of 2026, up from 7.1% a year earlier.
  • UK rule: Universities now risk losing sponsor rights if more than 5% of their applicants are refused visas, down from 10%.
  • Australia: The 2027 National Planning Level stays at 295,000 new international students.
  • Canada: New international students fell about 61% in 2025; the 2027 cap is being set this autumn.
  • China: The Chinese Government Scholarship covers tuition, housing, insurance, a monthly allowance and airfare.
  • Japan: Bangladesh and Japan are working toward an MoU on language training, study and jobs.

1UK universities pull back from Bangladeshi applicants

23.5%BD applications withdrawn, H1 2026
7.1%Same period in 2025
5%New refusal threshold

The UK has tightened compliance rules for sponsoring universities: an institution where more than 5% of prospective overseas students are refused visas now risks losing the right to recruit them, down from 10%. To stay under that line, some universities have withdrawn offers or paused recruitment from higher-scrutiny countries, including Bangladesh. The Home Office doubled study visa refusals in the first half of 2026 compared with a year earlier (The Business Standard).

What it means for you: Apply to several universities, including some with lower refusal rates, and be ready for a credibility interview. Know your course modules, your reasons for choosing the UK and how you will fund your studies.

2Australia holds its 2027 student cap at 295,000

4%Students from Bangladesh

Australia will keep its National Planning Level at 295,000 new overseas student commencements in 2027, the same as 2026, and no provider gets a smaller allocation. Visa applications are prioritised until a university reaches 80% of its allocation; after that, they are processed more slowly. Bangladesh is Australia’s fifth-largest source of international students, at 4% (Forbest Education).

What it means for you: Apply early in the cycle, before your chosen university fills 80% of its places. Research master’s and PhD students sit outside the cap.

3Canada sets its 2027 study permit cap this autumn

−61%New students in 2025 vs 2024

24 hrsWeekly off-campus work limit

Canada welcomed about 61% fewer new international students in 2025 than in 2024, and plans to set its 2027 study permit cap alongside its Immigration Levels Plan this autumn. Most applicants need a provincial attestation letter, but master’s and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt. The proof-of-funds requirement rises every 1 September (IRCC).

What it means for you: Graduate programmes at public universities are now the clearest route into Canada. Check the latest funds figure before preparing your bank documents.

4China: full scholarships for Bangladeshi students

100%Tuition covered (CGS Type A)
CNY 2,500–3,500Monthly allowance

The Chinese Government Scholarship (Type A) covers full tuition, on-campus housing, medical insurance, a monthly living allowance of about CNY 2,500–3,500 and a round-trip airfare. It is open for bachelor’s, master’s, PhD and one-year Chinese language programmes, with applications through campuschina.org. Last cycle’s call was announced on 19 December 2025 with a 10 January 2026 deadline (Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh).

What it means for you: Expect the next call around December, with a very short window. Prepare transcripts, a study plan, recommendation letters and a medical report now. Remember that China’s stricter entry-exit rules since 15 September 2026 penalise any false documents.

5Japan and Malaysia: new routes taking shape

Japan: In March 2026, a Japanese delegation met Bangladesh’s state minister to discuss study and job opportunities, proposing Japanese language and cultural training with native teachers. Both sides agreed to work toward an MoU (Dhaka Tribune).

Malaysia: Bangladesh was left out of Malaysia’s one-year Graduate Pass work visa for graduates from 32 countries (The Financial Express). Malaysia’s higher education minister later agreed in principle to extend it to Bangladeshi students, but formalities are still pending (The Daily Ittefaq).

What it means for you: For Japan, start language study (JLPT N5–N4) early. For Malaysia, check whether the Graduate Pass applies to Bangladeshis before counting on post-study work.

  3. Show genuine funds. Keep bank statements consistent and explain any large deposits.
  4. Authenticate every document. Fake or altered papers can lead to multi-year bans.
